How does Yaz work?

Yaz is a contraceptive pill for women. It is a type of contraceptive pill called a hormonal contraceptive. Yaz is also sometimes described as a combined oral contraceptive. Yaz contains two active ingredients, drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. Drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol are synthetic versions of hormones that are found naturally in a woman’s body, oestrogen and progesterone.

Yaz works by preventing ovulation. It also causes an increase in the thickness of the mucus in the cervix, the neck of the womb, which makes it more difficult for sperm to get to the womb from the vagina and, therefore, reach an egg. Drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol also affect the lining of the womb and make it less likely that a fertilised egg can be implanted there.

Taking Yaz normally results in more regular, less painful and lighter menstrual bleeding and is, therefore, sometimes prescribed for women who have problems with particularly heavy, painful or irregular periods.

How do I take Yaz?

The way that Yaz is taken is slightly different to other combined contraceptive pills. Each blister pack contains 28 tablets. 24 of these pills are pink and contain drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol, the active ingredients, which prevent pregnancy, and four of the pills are white and are what is described as inert. It is important to take Yaz correctly as missing a dose can result in pregnancy.

Who cannot take Yaz?

Yaz is not a suitable contraceptive for everyone. It should not be taken by women with either untreated or uncontrolled high blood pressure.

Yaz should not be taken by women with a history of heart disease, blood clotting disorders or circulation problems.

Yaz should not be taken by smokers over the age of 35.

Yaz should not be taken by women with a history of liver disease or liver cancer.

Yaz should not be taken by women who suffer with problems with their eyes or their kidneys or circulatory problems caused by diabetes

Your doctor will look at your complete medical history and decide whether Yaz is suitable for you before prescribing it.
