Xenical is a weight loss medication and is part of the family of weight loss drugs known as lipase inhibitors. These drugs work by limiting the amount of dietary fat that is absorbed by the gastrointestinal system. The human body requires fat to function, and preventing the absorption of dietary fat means that the body metabolises fat that is stores in the body causing it to lose weight.
Before you embark on a course of Xenical it is essential that you adopt a diet that is moderately low in dietary fat. Moderately low means that less than 30 percent of your calories come from dietary fat.
If a patient sticks to a moderately low fat diet there should be little in the way of side effects and if a patient does suffer with these they should be manageable.
Weight loss on Xenical can be slow to start off with, but patients normally notice some weight loss within a few weeks of starting on the medication. A healthy weight loss is considered to be about two or three pounds a week. Xenical allows patients this healthy weigh loss and research has shown that this is, on average, double the weight loss that they would achieve without the medication.
It is recommended that patients who are taking Xenical also take a multi vitamin supplement, which contains vitamins A, D, E and K, as all these are fat-soluble. This multi vitamin should not be taken within two hours of taking a Xenical tablet, so we suggest that the best time is just before you go to bed.
