Viagra
Viagra was introduced on to the market in 1998, as a treatment for erectile dysfunction. Interestingly, however, Viagra was not developed for treating this condition, it was being developed as a treatment for angina when its useful ‘side effect’ was discovered. It is estimated that forty per cent of men over the age of forty have problems getting or maintaining an erection so to say that the advent of Viagra revolutionised some men’s lives would almost be an understatement.

What is Viagra?
Famously Viagra comes as a diamond-shaped blue pill. It contains the active ingredient sildenafil and works by increasing the flow of blood to the penis so a man can gain an erection. It is also possible to buy sildenafil without a brand name, that is to say as a generic medicine.
Viagra is what is known as a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor. These types of medicines work by inhibiting a chemical in the human body that is called phosphodiesterase type 5.
How to take Viagra
- The best way to take a Viagra pill is on an empty stomach. This is because if you take it with food it will take longer to get into the blood steam and, therefore, take longer to work. You should swallow the pill whole with a glass of water.
- Viagra should be taken an hour before starting any sexual activity. This gives the pill time to get into the blood stream and start working. After taking the pill, and with sexual stimulation, you should be able to achieve an erection after about thirty, to sixty minutes.
- You should not drink grapefruit juice when you are taking Viagra as it can lead to an increase in the level of the medication in your blood stream and, potentially, increase the risk of side effects.
- You should not have more than one Viagra tablet a day.
Does Viagra have any side effects?
All medicines may, potentially, cause side effects. Anything that causes a change in the way the body functions may result in a side effect.
A very common side effect (affects more than one in ten people) of Viagra is headache. Common side effects (affects between one in ten and one in a hundred people) include dizziness, flushing, nasal congestion and indigestion.
