A Ventolin inhaler contains a medication called salbutamol. Salbutamol helps to open the air passages in the lungs, which allows you to breathe more easily. This is particularly helpful during an asthma attack, when airways can constrict and cause the patient to become breathless.
The Ventolin inhaler can be used to provide rapid relief when you experience breathing difficulties, tightness in the chest or wheezing. It can also be used before and during exercise to prevent the onset of an asthma attack.
The Ventolin inhaler contains salbutamol in powder form and uses a propellant in order to deliver it directly into the lungs, which is why it is so effective and fast acting.
Some recently introduced inhalers use propellants, which are environmentally friendly. Ventolin is available as an Evohaler and an Accuhaler, which contain, respectively, 100 mcg and 200 mcg of Salbutamol.
The instructions included with the packaging will show you how to use and maintain your inhaler. You should not change your dosing without discussing the matter with your doctor.
Your Ventolin inhaler will come with full instructions about how to use and to maintain it.
Ventolin should be prescribed with caution to women who are pregnant or who are breast-feeding, and only after a face-to-face consultation with a doctor.
You should not use Ventolin if you are allergic to either salbutamol or the propellant that is used in the inhaler to deliver the medication.
If you suffer with severe or unstable asthma then it is probable that your doctor will prescribe Ventolin alongside other medications, to ensure correct control for your condition.
Fewer than 1 in 10 people get side effects with Ventolin.
Some people will feel a little shaky or have a headache after using the inhaler.
Others feel that their heart beat speeds up, or beats more strongly than usual.
If, while taking Ventolin, you notice a change in your heartbeat you should see your doctor as soon as possible. In most cases these side effects will disappear with continued use.
Less common side effects include irritation of the mouth and the throat and muscle cramps.
You should never exceed the recommended dose, which is 4 puffs of an Accuhaler and 8 puffs with an Evohaler.
