Valtrex (valaciclovir) is an anti viral medication that is available on prescription as a treatment for herpes simplex 1 and 2, for cold sores, shingles and genital herpes. It works by stopping the herpes virus from replicating and infecting more cells in the body.
Valtrex works by preventing the herpes virus from reproducing. It manages to do this by blocking an enzyme, which is called DNA polymerase. The herpes virus needs this enzyme to live and to replicate. This allows the body’s immune system to control it.
Valtrex is taken orally as a treatment for genital herpes. As Valtrex can cause the body to become dehydrated, it is important that you drink plenty of fluid whilst on the medication.
Unfortunately genital herpes is not curable condition so Valtrex cannot get rid of the virus. It can, however, greatly alleviate the symptoms, particularly the blisters filled with pus around the genital area.
Valtrex is suitable for most people. It is not however, appropriate for people who have an impaired kidney function. Pregnant women or those who are breastfeeding should also speak to their GP before they begin a course of Valtrex. Valtrex should not be prescribed to anyone who is allergic to any of the active ingredients in the medication. Valtrex is contraindicated with several medicines so it is vital that you tell your doctor if you are taking any other medications before beginning a course of Valtrex.
Most people who take Valtrex do not experience any side effects. The most common side effects are abdominal pains, diarrhoea and headache. There are other potential side effects, which are listed in the leaflet, which comes with the medication.
