Spedra is a treatment for erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a condition suffered by men and is the inability to get or to maintain an erection. Spedra is the brand name for a medication with the active ingredient avanafil.
Spedra belongs to a category of medicines that are called phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5). Other medicines that work in a similar way to Spedra include sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis) and vardenafil (Levitra). These medications increase the concentration of a substance, which occurs naturally in the body. This chemical causes the walls of blood vessels to relax. When this happens in the penis it allows more blood to flow into the blood vessels of the penis, which in turn causes an erection
Significant improvements are seen in erectile function in men taking doses of between 50-200mg of Spedra. Medical studies have shown that around 60% of men with ED who take Spedra are able to achieve and maintain an erection that allows them to achieve vaginal penetration. This figure was significantly higher than the group of men who were prescribed the placebo pill (a pill that does not contain any medication). In the trials it was also shown that the effects of Spedra could last for longer than six hours at the highest dose.
Compared with other phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors, Spedra works very quickly. An erection will normally will occur in around 15 minutes so long as there is sexual stimulation. Spedra is not yet available to prescribe but we will offer it as soon as it is launched in the UK (around 7 April 2014).
The most common side effects experienced by men taking Spedra include flushing, headaches and nasal congestion but these disappear when the medication wears off.
