Skinoren is an acne treatment that is available on prescription. It contains an active ingredient called azelaic acid.
Azelaic acid works in two ways. It kills the bacteria that cause acne and limits the growth of the skin cells on the surface of the skin, which contain keratin. These block the skin’s pores, which leads to whiteheads and blackheads developing.
Skinoren is applied to the affected area twice daily, in the morning, and in the evening. If your skin is sensitive you should only apply the cream once a day, in the evening, for the first week. You can then continue using the cream twice daily. Your doctor will tell you how you should use the cream. The amount that you use will depend on the area that is affected.
Before you apply Skinoren, the affected area should be thoroughly washed and dried. Apply the cream and ensure that you wash your hands thoroughly afterwards. Improvement is normally seen after about four weeks of use.
Skinoren cream is suitable for use by adults and by young people aged between 12 and 18. You should not use the cream if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.
You should tell the doctor if you suffer from acne because Skinoren can sometimes exacerbate this condition.
You should also tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding before you are prescribed Skinoren.
Very common side effects of Skinoren include itching, redness and burning at the site of application. Common side effects include dryness, flaking, irritation, pain and discolouration of the skin. Rarely you may become allergic to Skinoren and sometimes if you are an asthma sufferer your asthma symptoms may worsen.
