Relenza contains the active ingredient Zanamivir, a type of medication called a neuraminidase inhibitor. Relenza is supplied as an inhaler, both as a treatment for when you develop flu symptoms and also as a prophylaxis to present flu symptoms from developing.
Relenza is an anti-viral, a type of drug that is used to combat a viral infection. The Influenza (flu) virus is highly contagious and relies on a helper chemical called neuraminidase, to spread the virus to adjacent cells. Without this helper chemical, the flu virus is unable to replicate or to spread.
Relenza (Zanamivir) contains a neuraminidase inhibitor that prevents the virus from leaving the infected cells and from spreading. This inability to replicate or spread reduces the severity and the duration of the infection.
Relenza is administered by using an inhaler. This is because it is not absorbed as well by the body if it is ingested. When the medication is inhaled it begins to work on the infection in the lungs immediately.
The dosage of Relenza that is prescribed for you is dependent on what the medication is being used for. If it is being used as a treatment for flu, that is to say if you already have developed symptoms, then the usual dose for both adults and for children is two inhalations of the drug, twice a day for five days.
If Relenza is being used as a prophylaxis then the dose would be two inhalations every day for ten days. If there is an outbreak of flu in the local community then the recommended dose is two inhalations of Relenza every day for up to 28 days.
Not everyone can take Relenza and it should be noted that this mediation is not a flu vaccination. Your doctor will take a full medical history before deciding whether or not you should be prescribed this medication. If you develop an allergic reaction whist taking Relenza then you should tell your doctor as soon as possible.
All prescription medications can result in side effects for the patient. Relenza is no exception, but side effects are not very common. The most common side effects side effects for Relenza are tightness in the chest, shortness of breath, swelling of the mouth and of the face and skin rashes and hives.
