Logynon is a hormonal contraceptive pill that is designed to be taken by women.
Logynon is a type of hormonal contraceptive pill that is commonly known as ‘the pill’. It is also sometimes called a combined oral contraceptive. Logynon contains two active ingredients, ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel. Ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel are synthetic versions of two hormones, which occur naturally in a woman’s body, called oestrogen and progesterone.
Logynon works by tricking the body into thinking that ovulation has taken place. This stops the monthly release of an egg by the ovaries.
Ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel also increase the thickness of the mucus that covers the lining of womb. This thickening of the mucus makes it more difficult for a sperm to reach an egg and also makes it more difficult for a fertilised egg to implant itself in the lining of the womb.
Taking Logynon will normally result in a woman having lighter and more regular periods. It is sometimes prescribed to women who are having problems with their periods, particularly if they are irregular, heavy or painful.
Logynon comes in what is known as a ‘monophasic’ pill. This means that every tablet of Logynon contains exactly the same dose of hormones. One Logynon tablet is taken every day for three weeks, after which you have a seven-day break from taking them. During this week-long break the levels of ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel in your blood drop, which causes a ‘withdrawal bleed’, which is similar to a normal period. Logynon is taken again after this seven-day break even if you are still in the process of bleeding.
Logynon cannot be prescribed for every woman. Women who have had blood clots or blood disorders would not be prescribed Logynon, neither would women with high blood pressure, angina or high cholesterol levels. Logynon cannot be prescribed to women who smoke more than forty cigarettes a day.
Your doctor will examine carefully your medical history and decide whether Logynon is suitable for you before you are prescribed the medication.
All prescription medications can cause side effects. The possible side effects of Logynon include:
