Levonelle is an emergency contraceptive pill. It is, perhaps, more commonly known as the ‘morning after pill’. Calling Levonelle the morning after pill, however, is not an accurate description of the medication as, in reality, it is effective up to 72 hours after sexual intercourse has taken place.
No emergency contraceptive pill can ever be described as 100 per cent effective. Levonelle is, however, highly effective, if it is taken within the 72 hour time frame after sexual intercourse has taken place. The sooner the medication is taken, the more effective it is likely to be. Levonelle will not prevent pregnancy in the rest of your cycle and may make any oral contraceptive you are taking less effective. For this reason it is important that you use a barrier method of contraception (for example condoms) until your next period.
All medications that you get on prescription may cause you to have side effects. Most people who take Levonelle do not experience any side effects at all. Side effects that have been noticed with this medication are:
You should see your doctor immediately if you experience any abdominal pain whilst talking Levonelle as it may indicate that you have an ectopic pregnancy.
Also, if you take Levonelle and vomit within two hours there is a strong likelihood that your body will not have absorbed the medication and you will need to take another tablet.
