How does Gedarel work?

Gedarel is a hormonal contraceptive pill, also known as a combined oral contraceptive pill which your controls menstrual cycle in a low dose form. Its two active ingredients are desogestrel and ethinylestradiol. These are synthetic versions of oestrogen and progesterone, two hormones, which occur naturally in a woman’s body,

The hormones, which are contained in Gedarel, fool the body into thinking that ovulation has occurred already. By doing this Gederal prevents the monthly release of an egg by the ovaries.

Ethinylestradiol and desogestrel also cause the mucus in the womb to get thicker, which makes it more difficult for sperm to reach an egg. Ethinylestradiol and desogestrel also affect the actual lining of the womb in such a way that it is more difficult for a fertilised egg to be implanted there.

Taking Gedarel will normally result in periods that are less painful, more regular, and lighter. It is, therefore, sometimes prescribed to women who have problems with their periods.

How do I take Gedarel?

Gedarel is a monophasic pill, which means that every pill contains exactly the same dose of hormones. One Gedarel pill is taken every day for three weeks, after which you then have a break from them for seven days. During this week-long break, the levels of the hormones in the blood drop. This drop results in a ‘withdrawal bleed’. This is similar to a normal period. You should start taking Gedarel again after one week even if you are still bleeding.

Who cannot take Gedarel?

Women who have a history of blood clotting disorders or blood disorders in general should not take Gedarel. Women with angina, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol levels should also not take it. Gedarel is not appropriate for women who smoke more than forty cigarettes a day.

Your doctor will decide whether Gedarel is a suitable contraceptive for you by having a careful look at your medical history.
