Flucloxacillin is a narrow spectrum, penicillin-based antibiotic that is available as either a capsule, an injectable or as an oral liquid that is used to treat a wide range of common bacterial infections.
Flucloxacillin prevents the growth of bacteria, by preventing them from forming cell walls. Without these cell walls the bacteria are unable to function properly and to multiply, which causes them to die.
Flucloxacillin is used to treat infections of the upper and the lower tract respiratory system, such as tonsillitis, bronchitis and pneumonia, infections of the urinary tract such as urethritis and cystitis, infections of the soft tissue and the skin, such as abscesses and boils, and wounds and burns that have become infected.
Flucloxacillin is not an appropriate treatment for everyone. Your doctor will decide whether it is an appropriate treatment for you.
Before you start a course of Flucloxacillin it is important that you read the printed information leaflet that is provided inside the packet.
You should take Flucloxacillin as your doctor advises you. Your doctor or your pharmacist will tell you what dose of the medication you should be taking and when you should be taking it. This information should also be printed on packet itself. Doses should be spaced out throughout the day.
It is best to take Flucloxacillin with water on an empty stomach.
It is important that you complete the whole course of Flucloxacillin, even if you think that the infection has cleared up, in order to prevent the infection from coming back.
If you forget to take a dose of Flucloxacillin, take one as soon as you remember, but do not take two doses at the same time.
