Dental Abscesses

Dental infections are the result of bacteria entering either the teeth or the gums. There are two types of abscess:

Periapical

A periapical abscess occurs when bacteria enter the tooth though holes in the enamel. This can result in the pulp in the tooth becoming infected and dying. If the infection is left untreated it can eventually make its way into the bone in which the tooth is sitting and cause an abscess that is filled with pus.

Periodontal

A periodontal abscess is not as common a periapical infection. A periodontal infection is one, which affects the gums. The gums will often become red and inflamed and a gap can develop between the gum and the tooth, which makes cleaning very difficult.

Dental infection treatment

Taking prolonged courses of antibiotics is not recommended so it is vital that you see your dentist to resolve the problem on a permanent basis.
